Europe tour package or private van? An honest comparison for Filipino travelers

Two different products, not two prices

A package is a bundle. The agency books the flights, the hotels, the coach and the guide, prepares the visa support letter, and hands you a day-by-day sheet with breakfast at seven and the bus at eight. You pay per person, you travel with whoever else booked that departure, and almost every decision has been made for you.

A private van is the ground half of a trip, done your way. You bring your own flights and hotels; we bring the van, a kabayan driver who speaks your language, and a route drawn around what your group actually wants to see. The price is for the vehicle, not the seat, and the itinerary belongs to you: a longer lunch in Bordeaux, an extra hour at the Grotto, a detour because someone’s cousin lives in Lyon.

When the package is the better buy

If you are traveling alone or as a couple, book the package. A van is priced for the whole vehicle, and one or two people cannot share that number far enough to make it sensible. The per-person price on a package flyer is built for exactly this traveler, and for a first trip to Europe it is genuinely hard to beat.

If it is your first time and you want everything handled, the package earns its keep. Visa support letters, travel insurance, a guide who counts heads at every stop — an agency does this all day, and we do not. We are drivers, not a travel agency, and we would rather say so.

And if you like a fixed schedule and a big group, the coach is not a compromise; it is the point. Some of the happiest travelers we meet wanted forty new friends, a videoke bus and a guide with a flag. A private van cannot give you that, and you should not pay for something you never wanted.

When your own van is the better buy

The moment your party reaches five, the math changes shape. A van is one price for everyone in it, so the sixth and seventh seats cost almost nothing more, while a package charges every one of them in full. For a group of five to seven, the private van is usually the sensible number, not the indulgent one.

Three-generation families are the clearest case. Lola does not do coach steps at seven in the morning, the toddler naps at two, and the teenagers want the Eiffel Tower at night rather than at ten past nine. A van bends around all of that; a package cannot, because thirty-eight other people are waiting.

Pilgrims, too. Lourdes on a package is a stop; Lourdes in your own van is the reason for the trip, with a second Sanctuary day and the torchlight procession on your own clock. And anyone with a wheelchair or a slower pace should know that a driver who drops you at the closest point the road allows is a different experience from a coach park across the river.

The van is for people who want their own stops: the lavender field that was not on the sheet, the merienda break when the group needs one. If that sounds like your family, you already know which side you are on.

What “all-in” means on each side

On a package flyer, the headline price is usually the beginning of the conversation. Read the inclusions closely: optional excursions are often priced separately, several dinners are on your own, tips for the guide and driver are expected on top, and a solo traveler pays a single supplement. None of this is dishonest — it is how the product is built — but the flyer figure and the final figure are rarely the same number.

With us, the quote is for the van and the driver, all-in for the road: fuel, motorway tolls and parking are included, and the driver’s hotel on nights away from Paris is itemized as its own line so you see it rather than find it. What is not included is just as plain — your hotels, your meals, entrance tickets, and anything you buy along the way. There are no tips expected and no supplements. What we agree in chat is what you pay.

The numbers, honestly

Multi-day trips in your own van with a Filipino driver start from €750 per day for the whole group. With seven passengers that is roughly €107 per person per day for private, door-to-door transport and a kabayan driver-guide — before you count seven train tickets and seven airport transfers.

Our ten-day “Lourdes, and beyond” signature journey — Paris, Versailles, Lourdes, Barcelona — is from €6,350 for the whole van. Day tours from Paris start from €475 for the day. We will not quote a package price here because we do not sell one. Put the two side by side yourself: the flyer’s per-person figure times your headcount, plus the extras, against the van’s single figure plus the hotels you would have booked anyway.

The hybrid most families choose

The honest answer for many kabayan is neither pure option. Families book their own flights and hotels — often with the miles a balikbayan has been saving for years — and hand us the ground: the van, the driver and the days. You keep the paperwork and the confirmations you trust; you lose the coach and the strangers. It is the version of Europe we quote most often.

Choose a package if… Choose a private van if…

Choose a package if you are one or two people, if this is your first trip to Europe and you want the visa letter, the insurance and every hotel handled by one desk, if you enjoy the rhythm of a big group and a fixed itinerary, or if the per-person price on the flyer is the number your budget is built around. You will have a good trip.

Choose a private van if you are five to seven people traveling together, if three generations are coming and lola’s comfort sets the pace, if Lourdes or another pilgrimage is the heart of the trip, if anyone in the group has mobility needs, or if the thought of a bus leaving without you at eight makes your shoulders tighten. Choose it, too, if you want to know exactly what you are paying for before anything is booked.

Is a private van cheaper than a package tour?

For one or two people, no — the package wins on price, and it is not close. From five people upward the van is one price shared by everyone: from €750 a day, roughly €107 per person per day at seven passengers. Whether that beats your flyer depends on what the flyer leaves out.

Can you help with our Schengen visa?

No. We are drivers, not a travel agency, and we do not process visas or issue support letters. A Manila agency’s visa desk is one of the honest reasons to book a package, especially for a first application.

Do you book flights and hotels?

No — you bring those, from your agency, your airline miles or your own booking. We handle everything on the ground: the van, the driver, the route and the days. Most families find this the easiest split.

Can a van trip be as organized as a package?

Yes, if you want it to be. Our signature journeys are fixed routes with a day-by-day plan and one price for the whole van; the difference is that the plan is yours to bend on the day, not a coach schedule you follow.

What if we are only four?

The per-person math is softer at four than at seven, but the reasons families choose a van — an elder, a wheelchair, a pilgrimage, a pace of your own — do not change with headcount. Tell us who is coming and we will be straight about whether the van makes sense for you.
